Time Stoppers by Carrie Jones
Time Stoppers by Carrie Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Time Stoppers introduces a cast of underdog characters that readers 8-12 will enjoy. Annie Nobody is in her 12th foster home, and though tries to befriend her new family, she is cruelly locked out of the house until she can perform one ‘simple’ task – teach the dog/wolf hybrids how to do a backflip. Jamie, a dark-skinned boy, lives with his family, or so he thinks. After witnessing his grandmother turn into a troll, he realizes the threats to eat him aren’t jokes. Enter Eva, a tiny, but brave dwarf who, astride a hovering snowmobile, rescues Annie and Jamie from the hungry & drooling grandmother troll.
A combination of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson with a smattering of Lemony Snickett and Roald Dahl thrown in, Time Stoppers is filled with fun and imagination. (Fantasy 8-12)
The book was longer than necessary, with some redundant scenes containing little if any new revelations. Yet, with an abundance of characters, a magical town, an evil crow-like villain, and many narrow escapes the book is sure to delight.
I would give the book a 3.5/5 stars.
