Daily Digest: What Grade Level do you Write At?

I “skimmed” the article (This Surprising Reading Level Analysis Will Change the Way You Write) about reading comprehension.

To write for the masses, you need to Keep Your Vocabulary Simple. Around a 3-5th grade level.

Wait? What?

People read for entertainment, to relax. The more complex the writing, the more they have to use their brain to understand. Since  I do most of my reading at night, the last thing I want to do is to think too hard.

So, it makes sense that the more accessible the read, the wider the reach. That doesn’t mean your readers are unintelligent. It simply means that if you want to reach the widest audience, your writing has to meet the needs of all your target audience.

As you write, remember to keep your target audience in mindDon’t overwhelm your readers but don’t dummy down your writing either.

Above all, write an entertaining story that all can enjoy.
